Have you seen the fight that's going on in Seattle over plastic bags? The ACC just dumped $500,000 into a local campaign!

I thought I would let you know about yours2share.com and my blog at yours2share.com/blog/ I believe sharing is one of the fundamental building blocks for a better environment in the future.

yours2share enables people to find like-minded partners to share any valuable asset, either through joint ownership or rental sharing. It’s independent and free to use. The website has extensive guidance on how sharing works, and template contracts.

Whilst second homes and yachts are usually an anathema to environmentalists, perhaps yours2share can help ensure that at least they are used for often, and not left empty most of the time. There is great scope for sharing anything valuable and infrequently used. Other obvious areas are: mobile homes (why are these so rarely shared?) and cars (people now often have third and fourth cars that are rarely used), but also what about bikes, sewing machines, gym equipment, photographic equipment, gardening equipment. People keep coming up with new ideas.

Sharing enables people to use items they either couldn’t afford or justify; it also often allows them to buy higher quality items and maintain them to a higher, and often more environmentally friendly standard. If we learnt to share just a bit more, there would be less space taken with parked cars, moored boats, endless sheds and less demand for more houses, and so on.

Finally sharing creates virtual communities of each private syndicate. Often sharing a boat, mobile home, lawnmower or whatever with a group of like-minded pals becomes the most important benefit of all to the syndicate members, something they had rarely considered at the outset.

It takes time for people to understand how sharing can benefit them, but once they start they often become passionate about it, rather like me!

StrawJet has developed a unique process for the manufacture of structural building components from a variety of waste agricultural stalks. Designed for rapid deployment and ease of construction, and requiring minimal operator training, the StrawJet System is flexible enough to handle everything from village-based to industrial-size manufacturing operations. The StrawJet approach combines a portable design with a patented easy-to-operate machinery to provide renewable building material with little or no ecological impact. The StrawJet System delivers a cost-competitive solution to growing worldwide building demand, while protecting both domestic and foreign environmental concerns and significantly reducing the carbon foot print of construction.

Here is a New York Times article relating to plastic bag use in New York City. The mayor has proposed a 5-cent per bag piece of legislation, but the numbers surrounding this bill are staggering. This article also suggests that the "break" from plastic to reusable bags is not entirely clear. This development should be interesting to follow.

A plastic fork takes over a 1000 years to decompose - yet we only use it once. So much unnecessary waste is created in New York and across the country when we order take out. America produces 25 percent of the worlds garbage, how much of that is unnecessary food packaging?

The Eco-To-Go program has already launched at participating restaurants in New York City; the concept being that when you order takeout, you should advise the restaurant that you want your order to be Eco-To-Go.

Restaurants will respond by delivering the food, with no extras, such as unnecessary napkins and plastic utensils, as you have all you need at home. It also hopes to encourage restaurants to use greener packaging.

Please read more about the Ecoagents at <a href="http://www.ecoagents.org" rel="nofollow">ecoagents.org</a> and <a href="http://www.eco-to-go.org" rel="nofollow">eco-to-go.org</a>

Here's a pretty cool product you might want to write about: www.theenergydetective.com

It's a household energy monitor that gives you real time information about how much electricity you're using. Really helps energy conservation, which helps save you a ton on your energy bill!
