yours2share enables people to find like-minded partners to share any valuable asset, either through joint ownership or rental sharing. It’s independent and free to use. The website has extensive guidance on how sharing works, and template contracts.

Whilst second homes and yachts are usually an anathema to environmentalists, perhaps yours2share can help ensure that at least they are used for often, and not left empty most of the time. There is great scope for sharing anything valuable and infrequently used. Other obvious areas are: mobile homes (why are these so rarely shared?) and cars (people now often have third and fourth cars that are rarely used), but also what about bikes, sewing machines, gym equipment, photographic equipment, gardening equipment. People keep coming up with new ideas.

Sharing enables people to use items they either couldn’t afford or justify; it also often allows them to buy higher quality items and maintain them to a higher, and often more environmentally friendly standard. If we learnt to share just a bit more, there would be less space taken with parked cars, moored boats, endless sheds and less demand for more houses, and so on.

Finally sharing creates virtual communities of each private syndicate. Often sharing a boat, mobile home, lawnmower or whatever with a group of like-minded pals becomes the most important benefit of all to the syndicate members, something they had rarely considered at the outset.

It takes time for people to understand how sharing can benefit them, but once they start they often become passionate about it, rather like me!

The Eco-To-Go program has already launched at participating restaurants in New York City; the concept being that when you order takeout, you should advise the restaurant that you want your order to be Eco-To-Go.

Restaurants will respond by delivering the food, with no extras, such as unnecessary napkins and plastic utensils, as you have all you need at home. It also hopes to encourage restaurants to use greener packaging.
