Quick Tips on Preventing Water Pollution from Paints
When using paints and other Household Hazardous Wastes (HHW) in and around your home, remember that it’s important to dispose of these materials properly to prevent water pollution. NEVER dump old paint or wash paint brushes into storm drains, ditches or gutters, which lead directly to creeks and streams. For latex paint, wash the brushes out in sinks or toilets located inside your house which lead to the sanitary sewer. If you have a septic tank, paint brushes can never be washed out into drains or toilets in your house. If left over paint cannot be used-up, given away, recycled, or solidify it with kitty litter and dispose of it in the trash.
In case of solvent based paints, it’s important to never wash out the brushes even in the sinks inside your home which connect to sanitary sewer. Doing so could cause complications. Read and follow all label directions regarding brush cleaning. Dispose of waste solvents properly.
