Make a Fluorescent Statement

compact fluorescent light bulbAccording to the US Environmental Protection Agency, if every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars. Imagine the kind of positive environmental impact if every household in the world would do just that!

Pretty amazing, isn’t it? A simple action can make such a huge difference! But we really need people to get involved. About a year ago, we replaced 6 incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) at high traffic areas of our office. Be fluorescent geeks like us. Let’s wear this t-shirt proudly and spread the words. [threadless]

  1. I know this is meant for good and I’m sorry, but I must say I’m against it. Fluorescent lightbulbs are not only much less appealing aestheticly, they contain mercury which is known to be a very dangerous chemical. They cannot be disposed of safely when they eventually burn out. Not to mention if they break in your home, in which case you are to open all windows and doors and nearly run away for at least 15 minutes to avoid poisoning, and still you shouldn’t touch it with your bare hands after. Public are not being properly informed of the health threat these “environment-friendly” bulbs pose, and I don’t think it will be a positive impact in the environment when lots of mercury-containing bulbs end up in the garbage, mercury and other chemicals consequently getting into the water system! Let’s leave aside the blinking, buzzing, headaches, and lighting that’s in many people’s tastes inferior. Support research for renewable sources of energy instead. Be an incandescent geek like me, and I’ll be designing incandescent supporting t-shirts shortly (?)

  2. The negative sides of using fluorescent light bulbs are preventable. You could take special care when replacing and disposing them. Look like some of us still choose convenience over environment! *sigh*
